Gigabeat S and Ubuntu

The new version of Ubuntu, 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, was released two days ago. I have been waiting a while for this release of Ubuntu to check out the automatically configured eye-candy. While I was a bit disappointed with the "automatic" portion of the eye candy something production has occurred as a result of this fresh install of Ubuntu.

As I have mentioned in previous articles, I have purchased a couple Toshiba Gigabeat MP3 players. The original Gigabeat I purchased was the F40, my preferred device to this day as it runs Rockbox.

I also purchased, several months ago a Gigabeat S60. The Rockbox hackers have yet to fully support the S series Gigabeats, however, I have come to the point where I have filled my F40 and am finding myself swapping songs on it regularly. In short, spending more time than I really want managing the music library on the device; I need more space.

That pretty much brings us up to today. I was playing with my newly installed laptop and decided to get my S60 Gigabeat communicating with Ubuntu. It was so much easier than I recall from my last attempts. The last attempts were admittedly half hearted.

So here's what I did:
From a terminal window I issued the following command:

sudo apt-get install gnomad2 mtp-tools

Followed by a quick download and install of libmtp found here: http://ar.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libm/libmtp/

That is it! From here I launched Gnomad2 and immediately, and with much greater speed than I imagine, all of the media on the S60 was at my hands.

If you attempt to "Get Jukebox Information" from the Jukebox Library menu be certain to set the owner string first. If you do not Gnomad2 will crash when you click "Get Jukebox Information"
